Avant Garde was created in the late 1960s as the logo for the short-lived, but highly influential magazine, Avant Garde. Asart director, Herb Lubalin devised the logo concept and its companion headline typeface. Then he and Tom Carnase, a partner in LSC design firm, worked together to transform the idea into a full-fledged typeface.
Co-founder and president of the World Typeface Center Inc., an independent type design agency. Publication of the in-house magazine "Ligature". Besides type design, Carnase has designed graphics for packaging, exhibitions, corporate identities and logos for numerous clients, including ABC, CBS, Coca-Cola, Nast Publications, Doubleday Publishing and NBC.
